Putting Greens

Is a Putting Green Right for Your Backyard?

A putting green is a great use of space for some households and a poor one for others. A quick gut check.

Is a Putting Green Right for Your Backyard?

It’s right when you’ll use it weekly

The people who love their backyard green are the ones who putt most days — working on pace, short putts, and a repeatable stroke at home. If golf is a monthly outing, the same money into a patio or turf lawn will probably get more use.

It’s right when the space is otherwise awkward

Narrow side yards, a slope you’ve never furnished, a corner that’s just dead lawn — a green can turn low-value space into the most-used part of the yard. It also stays green and tidy year-round with almost no water, which a lawn in that spot won’t.

Think about resale honestly

A quality green is a selling feature to a golfer and a neutral-to-slight negative to someone who isn’t — they see a specialised feature to remove. If you’ll be in the house five-plus years, build what you’ll enjoy. If a sale is near, a flexible turf-and-patio layout appeals to more buyers.
